Masculine Birthday Card

Hi friends.  I'm sneaking in today with a masculine birthday card which is the most difficult thing for me to do.  I LOVE bows and flowers, wispy feminine touches and lots of embellishments and I have large amounts of anxiety when I need to do a card for a man.  But, I think this works.  AND...  I was able to sneak in some ribbon from the December Ribbon Club Assortment from Really Reasonable Ribbon!

The December Ribbon Club Assortment is a winter themed collection of ribbon.  It contains 9 styles and a total of 17 yards of ribbon and crochet lace.  Each monthly assortment is a color or holiday themed collection of ribbon.  What a fun way to build your ribbon stash and try new ribbon styles.

I like to keep it clean and simple when I make cards for men.  They just don't appreciate all the do-dads that we women like.  (What's WRONG with them??  hahaha)

I did a double layer of ribbon across the middle of the card under the sentiment.

I also added a strip of ribbon vertically and I dovetailed the bottom. 

This is a perfect way to use up some ribbon scraps and as a bonus, the card is super flat for mailing.

Wishing All a Happy Father's Day

Hi Everyone,

It's me, Deborah , giving you some inspiration on Father's Day and sending warm wishing to all those wonderful Dads out there. I hope you all are having a great day with your family, friends or what every you have planned for today, and especially if you are crafting! :D   

I know Father's Day is here and most of us are done with our Father's Day cards but I wanted to share a couple of cards I made with the really cool ribbon from the RRR store. I think you will agree that this ribbon is awesome for these type of cards. :D

I made two Masculine Dress Shirt Cards using this diagonal striped ribbon -

For these cards I used the Satin Diagonal Striped Ribbon. 

I just love how this ribbon looks like a real "tie" on these shirts. 

I just couldn't help myself, I had to find out if it would work out. (lol) 

I added the sentiment card on the inside.

Masculine Card

Welcome back to the Really Reasonable Ribbon Blog. I am excited to share with you this masculine card I made for my husband for his birthday.  This design could also be used for Father's Day.  Really Reasonable Ribbon has some wonderful masculine ribbon for your cards or projects.  

This is the gorgeous 3/8" Satin Diagonal Stripe Turftan/Tan ribbon and the bow for this masculine card was made with the Zutter Bow It All bow maker and attached to the card using the 3/8" Scor-Tape that was purchased at Really Reasonable Ribbon.

 The supplies that I used are the Graphic 45 Collections, Come Away With Me and Ladies Diary; Sue Wilson Designs-Scandinavian Collection-Corner and SW Double Pierced Square dies; Tattered Lace-Old Car; Cheery Lynn Design-Pierced Banner die and old buttons, keys, brads and clock from my  supplies.

Make Today Ridiculously Amazing Masculine Card

Hello, Ribbon Lovers!  I have a super fun masculine card to share with you today.  I know a lot of you struggle when it comes to making a card for a guy, and you are afraid to add ribbon for fear it will be too "girly" .  But it all comes down to using the right ribbon, the right color palette and little touches along the way.  The February Ribbon Club Assortment is loaded with gloriously green ribbons, and several of them, I am happy to report, lend themselves nicely for masculine projects.  Take a look at this "Make Today Ridiculously Amazing" card and you'll see what I mean.

This is such a strong masculine card, and the Emerald Plaid Ribbon adds a needed jolt of color to the vintage colors of the paper collection.   The paper layers have been distressed along the edges to give it a rugged feel.  I added more color by adding a strip of Emerald Crosshatch Ribbon to the left hand side of my card focal.

And there's nothing girly about that rugby player, right?  I drew attention to the detail photo and novelty button by encircling them with a bit of natural burlap string.  The circular element adds a bit of fun to the card layout, too.

 

The inside has more layered papers from the 7 Gypsies Vintage Varsity Collection and a computer journaled sentiment.  Easy peasy, masculine and fun!  Who knew it could be so simple to make a great masculine card?

A Valentine For My Hunny Bunny

So have you started thinking about making Valentine's for your sweeties yet? I am the only girlie in a house filled with men, so as much as I would LOVE to make frilly, fussy, lacy, gorgeous Valentine's covered in doilies and such, there just aren't that many people I can give them to.  My guys kinda frown on receiving them. ;)  They tend to also like to receive the most simple cards, which goes against my grain, so I do my best to keep embellies to a minimum when I craft for them.  But I can't make a card without ribbons!  Just not happening!

That is when I pull out my natural fibers and trims for their cards. I'll still add a flower or two, because guys still like flowers, just usually not a whole card full of them.

It's time to get creative with your ribbon choices on those masculine cards!

Plaids, stripes, and polka dots are always great picks.  I went for the simple, but always fashionable 2 1/2" cotton ribbon as a base for my trim across the bottom of the card.  Love the frayed edges to it! :) This was topped with the gorgeous 1/2" red wrinkled ribbon that has such a fabulous texture.  It looks wonderful against that natural cotton ribbon.

A pretty carnation makes a simple accent.  Flowers similar to this one can be found in the RRR store. In fact, a brand new shipment of Wild Orchid Craft mulberry flowers has just arrived, so have fun filling up your shopping cart!  There are some I can't wait to get my crafty hands on! :)  Click on the 'new' tab at the top of the page to see all of the fun new goodies!

By the way, since I first started my blog, I have called my hubby my 'hunny bunny.' when I came across this sentiment stamp, I had to grab it!

Garage Pallet Grunge Art

Well life is slowly but surely getting back to normal as we recover from all of the craziness that led up to the holidays....

Today I want to share with you a fun gift I made for my husband.  He loves wooden pallets and the neat things people make with them.  One of  his favorite things to do is look at all of the clever ideas on Pinterest for projects made with reclaimed pallets.

When I saw that one of my favorite online craft stores was carrying miniature pallets, I immediately ordered several so that I could make a Christmas gift for my hubby!  When we would visit the auto parts store, I would find little odds & ends in the parking lot and put them in my pocket.  The same when we would go to the car wash.  Since I am always picking up little doo-dads and putting them in my pocket, no one in my family ever questioned what I was doing!  Guess the pack rat tendencies finally paid off! :)

While most people don't tend to think of ribbons and flowers as masculine, plaids like the blue/gold I used here, and burlap string are perfect for any project you make for a guy.  Neutral flowers also go well.  Most guys like flowers as long as you don't go overboard.  A few can add a nice touch.

I challenge you to make a masculine project (or several!) in the upcoming year.  I promise we'll have some challenge themes here at the Really Reasonable Ribbon blog that will work well.  Grab some plaid ribbon and get busy!  Especially while that amazing sale is going on! :)

Hello, Ribbon Lovers! Do you struggle with embellishing your masculine cards? Well, help is on the way! I created this Graphic 45 Good Old Sport Masculine Birthday card, and wanted to add ribbon. Because we all know...no card is complete without a little bit of ribbon! And men can be awfully squeamish about getting a card that is ribbon adorned, so you have to be careful what you use. This 7/8" Black Satin ribbon is as stylish as an Armani tux! It adds a soft sheen and elegant feel to this Good Old Sport masculine birthday card. And I just love the way a touch of black anchors a design and pulls all those different patterned layers together. This ribbon is soft and supple and comes in a rainbow of colors, and varied widths. It's a great option for a bow like this one, as it holds its shape really well. I tied this elegant double loop bow with the help of my Zutter Bow-it-All. Can You Use Ribbon on a Masculine Card? YES You Can!

Hi friends.  Today I have a masculine card to share and yes, I included some ribbons from Really Reasonable Ribbon!  My cards just don't feel complete until I add some ribbon.

While I don't usually go for bows on a masculine card, I think you can always incorporate ribbon and this is the perfect type of card to use up some of your shorter ribbon scraps.

I created the sentiment on my computer and I ran a strip of Metal Gray Diamond Satin across the center of the card under the sentiment and added a piece of 1/4" Black Grosgrain on top of that.  I cut the ends of the grosgrain in points for a more 'manly' look.

My favorite adhesive for attaching ribbon to my project is Scor-Tape.  It works wonderfully on ribbon and it's available in many different widths at Really Reasonable Ribbon.

Tips and Techniques:

Pleated Ribbon ~ The May Arts Burlap Wired Ribbon is a dream to work with and pleat. I've included a tutorial to create this pleated ribbon below. 

Layered and Wrapped Ribbons ~ I layered four of Bonnie's fabulous natural ribbons starting with the Natural Jute Ribbon topped by Wired Pleated Burlap Ribbon, then 5/8" Jute Ribbon, and finally wrapped with white Bamboo Cording.

Twine Flower ~ Who says you can't use flowers on a masculine project? This one is created with 20lb Natural Hemp Cord using my Twine Flower Tutorial found here. I topped it with a button from the Natural Button Grab Bag. There is such a nice variety of buttons in the grab bags! 

Leaves ~ I trimmed several small sections of May Arts White Leaves and tucked around my flower.

Pleated Burlap Wired Ribbon Tutorial

Supplies:

May Arts Wired Burlap Ribbon

Ruler

Pencil

To determine the length of ribbon needed, each 1 inch pleat takes 2 inches of ribbon with an extra ½ inch on each end, so the 6 inch section of pleated ribbon on my card required 13 inches of wired burlap ribbon. You can work directly off your roll of ribbon, so there is no need to cut until your pleating is completed, but this guide will help you assure that you have enough ribbon for your project. 

Step 1. On the back of your ribbon, make a small pencil mark at 1.5 inches from the end, then ½ inch from that mark, then repeat across the length of your ribbon. Your pattern will be 1.5 inches, ½ inch, 1.5 inches, ½ inch, 1.5 inches, ½ inch etc . .

Step 2. Fold the end of the ribbon at the first 1.5 inch mark towards the back with wrong sides together.

Step 3.  At the next mark, ½ inch further into the ribbon fold in the opposite direction this time with right sides together to create your first pleat.

Here’s what it should look like from the top side:

Here’s a side view so you can see the direction of the folds:

Step 4. Fold again on the next mark 1.5 inches further into the ribbon with wrong sides together.

Here’s a view from the back side after this fold:

Step 5. Fold again on the next mark ½ inch further into the ribbon with right sides together.

Step 6. Continue to repeat these folds until you get the length of pleated ribbon required for your project:

Note, I have shown the side view with the folds slightly open so you can see the direction of the folds. You will actually pinch the wired ribbon so it lays flat:

The wired ribbon holds the pleats well, but I tucked a piece of Scor-Tape in the fabric layers to hold the pleats in place before adhering to my card with more Score-Tape.

Masculine Twill!

Hello! It's Connie again! Well, my husband's birthday was last week (actually it was on Valentines day) and I needed to make him a card. When you think masculine you may not normally think of ribbon. However I do have a few "go to" ribbons for manly cards. One being twill! Two of my favorites for Masculine cards are cream and black. As you can see here, I decided to go with the black twill tape! I love using twill...it ties wonderfully into a a bow or just a simple knot, which is what I have done here, since I was going for that masculine look! Twill does come in many different colors, and the Really Reasonable Ribbon store has lots to choose from!!


Now on to the rest of my card. When I saw this image and sentiment from DRS designs I knew I had to get it for my husband! Here I have inked the sentiment and image with craft black and heat embossed it with clear EP on glossy card stock covered with Tim Holtz Alcohol inks. The DP is from Basic Grey's Indian Summer package, and the base was embossed with the distressed lines cuttlebug embossing folder.
