Go Fly a Kite! Iris Folding with Ribbon Tutorial

Today I have a quick tutorial for you for an Iris Folding project using ribbon from Really Reasonable Ribbon.  This is an easy project and a great way to use up some shorter lengths of ribbon.

My pattern came from the book Iris Folding Compendium by Maruscha Gaasenbeek and Tine Beauveser.  I think this book is currently out of print, but there are lots of great Iris Folding pattern books out there.  Honestly, once you understand how it works, you can even make your own patters for basic shapes.  This technique is traditionally done with folded papers, but using ribbon is actually faster and I think it looks better.

1.  Print out two copies of your pattern.  Tape one copy in the postion you want to your paper.  Keep in mind that you will end up with a mirror image of this shape.  Cut around the outside edge with a craft knife.

2. Tape the pattern to the underside of your cut out.

3.  Begin adding ribbon pieces on top of the pattern in numerical order.  For this pattern I'm using 4 colors and the order (1) garden rose, (2) delphinium, (3) sage, (4) turquoise.  Cut ribbon lengths just long enough to cover the entire pattern piece and tape each end to secure.  If you are using a ribbon with a right and wrong side, you will place the ribbon right side down.  I'm using Shimmer Satin Ribbon which does not have a right and wrong side.

4.  Keep going until you completely cover the pattern.  Then make sure the ribbon is secure and add additional tape if necessary.  Remove the pattern piece and turn your piece over and there is the finished piece.  Pretty cool, huh!

To finish  the card off, I added a little kite sting made from white Hemp Cording and the tails are 1/4" Grosgrain Ribbon tied in a knot with the ends trimmed in a v-shape.  I adhered the hemp cording using 1/8" Scor-Tape that I twisted into a thin rope.  I pressed it onto the card in the shape I wanted and then pressed the cording to the tape.  You can adhere the narrowest ribbons and trim like this with no visible adhesive.  The kite tails are adhered using Mini Glue Dots.  I then added a rub on sentiment and layered it on a few different colors of cardstock to correspond with the ribbon colors I used. This is the finished card.

Thanks for stopping by today. I hope you'll try this fun technique.

Who says ...?

Who says you shouldn't use ribbon on cards for men and boys?  Not me!  I know ribbon and lace are considered "girly" and therefore not ideal for masculine cards, but there are so many wonderful ribbons here in Bonnie's store that are great for men and boy cards.  You don't need to use them for bows and butterflies - just a peek of folded ribbon as an accent, or a strip of ribbon for demarcating elements on a card, or just for adding another dimension and/or color.   The black ribbon on these cards is from the May Ribbon Club assortment, and the oh-so-cool round CANDi embellishments are also from the RRR shop.  Have you tried them yet?  They're so fun to use.
I missed the Father's Day challenge last week, but am making up for it this week with these 3 masculine card layouts - yes, with ribbon!  I love using simple silhouette images, as the images themselves are a clean, crisp but elegant focal point, and therefore leave a lot of empty space for all the added goodies, like ribbon.  These silhouettes are all free downloads or dingbat fonts.  (If you like silhouettes too, visit the sidebar on my blog for links to some (mostly) free silhouette sites.)

I hope these cards inspire you to use more "manly" ribbon in the future.  Have fun!

Thanks

Hi everyone!  I hope you are all having a fabulous weekend!

I have a pretty card today that I made with the October Afternoon - Farmhouse collection paper and stickers.

I used my Martha Stewart doily punch for the balck border and added a beautiful bow made from sheer organza ribbon with a satin center.

This card went together really quickly but I love the way it turned out!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

A Gift From The Heart

Hi everyone... I hope you all are having a great week so far.
Today, I would like to share a card that I sent to my boy's teacher. The main image is from printable vintage image that I purchased online a while ago. To sweeten the card, I added green silk ribbon with twine and button.

Card was distressed with acrylic paint on the edges and for accent, I added three various size buttons on the left top corner.

For you who like to create a feminine card, I hope I have inspired you today to create one for someone special... Cheers, Linda

Other Materials:
Prima patterned paper
Papertreyink cutting die
My Mind's Eye patterned paper

A Summer Banner

It's Emily here today with a quick little summer project to share!

I recently discovered how fun it is to make a simple little banner to spruce up any boring old wall. It started with a few canvas squares and some mist and I was instantly hooked!

Add pretty ribbons, paper & embellishments to the mix and you're in business!  Flower rosettes are so popular right now and they add nice dimension to any wall hanging or banner!

Make sure you stop by my blog for more details on this project! This is a class I will be teaching this summer at my LSS, so if you're in the area, I would love to have you join!

On my card I used the darling mouse image from Crafters Companion and I've colored her with Copics. I also added some glitz to her dress, bonnet, and flowers. I ran the ribbon through the buckle and then glued on top of the double ruffled ribbon. The Birthday Wishes was stamped on the beautiful frames from CottageCutz.

RRR May Blog Hop Winner!

This is the second post of the day. Be sure to scroll down to see the fun and summery project that Patti has made for us today.

Thank you so much for hopping along with us this month on the Really Reasonable Ribbon's Ramblings Blog Hop. We had so much fun and we hope you did too!! We'll be hopping on the 13th of each month, so be sure to mark your calendars and join us again next month.

Our question this month was:  How much time do you get to devote to your favorite crafting activity each week?

Well, the general consensus is NOT ENOUGH!!

I'm not surprised by this at all.  Most crafters have it pretty bad and we'd be happy to sit at our desks and create stuff all day long.  I want you all to make a point of getting at least a little 'me' time each week.  Everyone is happier when they get a little time to do what brings them joy.  Now GO AND GET YOUR CRAFT ON!!

Now, on to our winner who will receive the May Ribbon Club Assortment along with the other fun goodies shown here which are all available at Really Reasonable Ribbon.

The winner will have 48 hours to contact me by clicking on the contact button at the top of the blog and sending me your full name and shipping address.

Beautiful hop and I love this month's selection! I miss my mailings, but I may have to rejoin as I was always the happiest on the days my shipment would be sent! I spend maybe 4 hours a week crafting, which isn't enough but it's all the time I have right now. I work full time and craft normally on the weekend to relax. Love the hop! Thanks for sharing!

Now if you didn't win, don't worry!! We will be 'hopping' each month so you'll have another chance to win soon! We hope you stop by and visit our blog often.

Be sure to check out our current challenge here. We'd love to have you play along with us. Have a super day!
